Homemade San Francisco Rat Poisons

Rats are pests which enter your home in search of food and shelter. They are dirty and carriers of many diseases. They cause a lot of damage as they bite through furniture, wires, appliances, clothing and food. Getting rid of San Francisco rats has to be done quickly since they multiply rapidly and soon your home will become an abode of a whole family of rats. Using baits and trapping them may not be effective as rats avoid them. Commercial rat poisons are available but they are risky especially if there are pets or children in the home. Even if the poisons are kept out of reach rats have a habit of carrying food and hiding them everywhere. There are chances of accidental ingestion of poisons. Some chemical poisons also have to build up by repeated consumption before they act. Storing of poisons is also dangerous. Homemade poisons are simple and can be made whenever needed. They are also harmless and cheaper. Poisons have to be mixed with appetizing food to entice the California rats. Rats are clever creatures and take small bites of food. If they sense the presence of toxic materials they avoid it. Here are some recipes for homemade poison. Homemade poisons are made with ingredients easily available at home and can be mixed when needed.

Using plaster of Paris
Plaster of Paris is a dry powder made of gypsum. This hardens when mixed with liquid. . If the rats eat it, it will harden in the rat’s stomach and cause the rat to die. Equal amounts of plaster of Paris and cornmeal are mixed in a bowl. Add sufficient quantity of milk and knead to make dough. Break small chunks of this dough and make small balls. Place the balls in areas where you think the rats may be hiding. They can be placed under cupboards, at the back of the fridge, near a rat hole or in dark corners. Check after a few days to see if San Francisco rats have chewed them. If they remain untouched replace with fresh balls as the plaster of Paris may become hard.

Using baking soda
Make a dry mixture of equal amounts of flour, sugar and baking soda. Place them in small plastic containers for California rats to eat. The bicarbonate of baking soda reacts with the acid in the rat’s stomach to produce carbon dioxide. This gas builds up causing internal blockage or rupture since rats cannot pass gas

Using instant potatoes
Mix a cup of plaster of Paris with a pack of instant potatoes. A dash of cinnamon can be added as flavor. Add water and pour into dishes for rat consumption.

Using peanut butter
Peanut butter can also be mixed with baking soda or plaster of Paris or boric acid. Boric acid acts slowly and has to be repeated. Rat poisoning is to be used as a last resort. Even if all the San Francisco rats are killed new rats may enter. Preventing entry of rat by rat proofing your home is a better option.
